In Al- Ayat project we made an open call for a design competition and we invited architecture students to apply with their design proposals according to the needs assessment. The project is located in an informal village called Abu Ghaddan, in Al-Ayat, 60 km away from El-Giza, Egypt. It has direct beneficiaries which counts for 1000 individuals with 4000 more from surrounding villages. It is expected that the project acts as a pilot to be replicated and developed on a rather wider scale. The kids used to walk for 7 Km every day to reach to the nearest school and many parents would drop out their kids and they won’t continue their education because it was not safe for them. Through this project, Hand Over aimed to work on community inclusion, education, sustainable practice and healthcare. Using the project to raise the community’s environmental awareness towards; sustainable building, the use of environmentally- friendly-local building materials, decreasing water and energy consumption, waste disposal, as well as broadening the residents’ awareness towards living sustainably and at low costs.
