Bait Aziza’s design is inspired from the color, light, shadow, form and texture found on the streets of tunis village. The house humbly blends in with the fayoum’ s charcter yet it stands out with the depth of its exterior , giving no hints to the personality of it’s interior. One of the most prominent aspects of the design is the house’s nature inviting inner court that brings the outdoors into the enclosed and private space. Also, the openings allow for visual tracking of light throughout the day; the floods of natural light and views of nature are the key purposes of the windows. They are also designed to maximize natural ventilation in summer and maximize sunlight in winter. Tunis village is known for it’s pottery arts therefore so many relics of popular culture and symbols are found throughout the house creating a vibrant artistic expression. The eyes want to collaborate with the other senses. All the senses, including vision, can be regarded as extensions of the sense of touch and that’s why the choice of materials is a very important aspect in the design. The house has stone foundations, rammed earth walls all covered with a light shade of clay plastering, wooden and reed ceilings, flooring of stones and clay tiles. The main approach in this design is to reflect our traditional building techniques yet create experiential contemporary architecture.
